Four facts that change the job

  • Over 10 m² needs a licence SafeWork NSW licenses the removal of any amount of friable asbestos and of more than 10 square metres of bonded asbestos, and Wollongong City Council states the same 10 m² line. Below it a homeowner may remove bonded asbestos, though the NSW Government strongly recommends a licensed removalist.
  • Test before you touch You cannot identify asbestos by looking at it: only a sample tested at a NATA-accredited laboratory confirms it. Wollongong City Council and the NSW Government both say a house built before 1990 probably has some.
  • The council depot says no Wollongong City Council says you cannot take asbestos to its waste disposal depot, and the NSW EPA's Illawarra list names a facility at Dunmore, in the Shellharbour council area.
  • Neighbours hear first For licensed work the removalist must notify SafeWork NSW at least five calendar days ahead and give notice to the neighbours.

Asbestos Removal across Wollongong

Two councils cover this site's area, and they say different things. Wollongong City Council states that you cannot take asbestos to its waste disposal depot at Kembla Grange. The NSW EPA's list of facilities that take household asbestos names one facility under Illawarra and South Coast, at Dunmore, with a note that it accepts waste only in the shire.
